The program is designed for students to develop a keen understanding, critical thinking, and key skills needed to find solutions to important health challenges facing women and children across the globe. This is a very vast subject and students are encouraged to further broaden their knowledge in any key interest area within this subject. This Master’s of science in Maternal, Newborn and Child Health provides the knowledge and skills that will prepare individuals to contribute to community programs and other interventions aimed at improving the health and well-being of vulnerable and underserved women, children, and families. The Program is conceptualized with sensitivity to cultural diversity. Participants will be able to undertake the process of planning and evaluating community programs with a special emphasis on women and children its intended to mitigate the alarming maternal and child mortality rates, it empowers participants with a profound understanding, critical evaluation and skills centered on a primary health care model using strength based approaches to asses, find solutions and tackle the physical and psychosocial health challenges facing mothers and children.

Course Objective

The prime goal of the course is to enhance the embracing of a holistic approach to maternal and child health at a master’s and research level in order to achieve safe, effective, timely, and efficient maternal and child health care.

Entry Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in the biological, sociocultural, behavioral, and policy domains that impact the health of the MCH population these include Nursing and Midwifery, Medicine, Social work and psychology, Nutrition, Counselling, Public health, Community Development.

Career opportunities

After completing this specialization, students are expected to apply their knowledge and skills within this key health domain. Students who complete this program usually find opportunities to work within the health system with a focus on maternal and child health. Students also get involved in research to further understand and evaluate the incidence, prevalence, and opportunities for change for better outcomes with regard to health for women and children. Maternal and child health professionals often work and provide services in a variety of work environments, such as hospitals and clinics, research centers and non-government organizations.
